Brazilian writer, journalist and cultural honoree Maria Nazareth Dória has built a literary career that extends beyond her home state of Sergipe. Born in Canhoba, a small municipality in northeastern Brazil, she has earned recognition through her books, contributions to anthologies and involvement in literary, arts and journalism organizations in Brazil and abroad.
Dória has published 26 books in Portuguese. Her work also includes five books translated into Spanish, two into English and one into French, bringing her writing to readers across linguistic and national boundaries.
Her hometown remains an important part of that story. Canhoba awarded Dória its highest civic honor and included her in its gallery of distinguished natives, recognizing her cultural contributions and connection to the community.
A Presence in International Literary Communities
Alongside her individual publications, Dória has contributed to numerous Brazilian and international anthologies, including collections published in Italian, French, Spanish, English and Romanian. These collaborative projects complement her involvement in organizations devoted to literature and the arts.
On June 17, she was inducted into the Academia de Letras e Artes de Laranjeiras (ALLA), a literary and arts academy based in a city widely regarded as a cultural center of Sergipe. She became the institution’s first female corresponding member.
Dória also belongs to the Academia de Letras e Artes Luso-Suíça (ALALS), a Portuguese-Swiss literary and arts academy, and is a founding member of the Academia de Letras e Artes do Rio de Janeiro (ALARJ).
Her affiliations include Italy’s Nucleo Accademico Italiano di Scienze, Lettere e Arti (NAISLA), the Associação das Jornalistas e Escritoras do Brasil (AJEB), an association of Brazilian women journalists and writers, and Rede Sem Fronteiras, an international cultural network.
The Federação Brasileira dos Acadêmicos das Ciências, Letras e Artes (FEBLACA) awarded her an honorary doctorate in literature in recognition of her work.
Writing, Journalism and Recognition
Dória’s career also includes regular contributions to cultural publications. She writes a column for Autorretratos magazine, which named her its short story writer of the year in 2025. The award recognizes a distinct aspect of her literary work alongside her book-length publications.
She also serves as a columnist for the international magazine Panorama Cultural and as a council member of the Associação Paulista de Imprensa (API), a press association based in São Paulo.
Among the honors listed in her biography is the 50th-anniversary medal of the Associação Brasileira das Forças Internacionais de Paz (ABFIP), an organization associated with international peacekeeping. A winner of literary competitions, she has accumulated dozens of awards and honorary titles throughout her career.
Through books, translations, columns and participation in cultural institutions, Dória has developed a body of work that connects her roots in northeastern Brazil with literary communities abroad. Her career encompasses both individual authorship and collaborative publishing, reflecting a sustained commitment to literature and cultural exchange.
