From Ecology to Literature: Paulo S. Oliveira Turns His Observation of Life into Stories of Encounters and Passion 

A full professor at the University of Campinas (Unicamp) with an international career in scientific research, Paulo S. Oliveira has expanded his work into literature, exploring love, relationships and human connections in the urban landscape.

A career built upon observing nature has found a new path through literature. Paulo S. Oliveira, Full Professor of Ecology at the University of Campinas (Unicamp), has recently expanded his activities beyond academia, beginning a literary journey dedicated to stories of encounters, romance and passion in major cities. 

With a degree in Biology, Oliveira holds both a Master’s degree and a Ph.D. in Ecology from the University of Campinas. He also completed postdoctoral research at Harvard University in the United States and Universität Würzburg in Germany. His academic career has given him extensive international experience and contact with different countries, cultures and ecosystems. 

Throughout his career, Oliveira has lived in the United States, Germany, France and Mexico. His scientific work has also taken him across some of Brazil’s most important ecosystems, including the Amazon rainforest, the Pantanal wetlands, the Cerrado savanna and the Atlantic Forest. 

These experiences helped develop a characteristic that connects his scientific and literary work: observation. Observing people, observing himself and observing nature are among his greatest interests. As the author puts it, “this is how we learn about life, this is how we learn to live.” 

From Scientific Research to Urban Stories 

Before entering the world of literary fiction, Paulo S. Oliveira established a distinguished academic career. Together with international colleagues, he published three books in the field of Ecology: The Cerrados of Brazil, The Ecology and Evolution of Ant-Plant Interactions, and Ant-Plant Interactions: Impacts of Humans on Terrestrial Ecosystems. 

He also served as president of the Association for Tropical Biology and Conservation in the United States, further strengthening his presence in the international scientific community. 

In literature, however, the perspective that for decades focused on relationships within ecosystems has turned toward human relationships, particularly those that emerge amid the rhythm and complexity of large cities.

This perspective gave rise to O Amor Urbano: Histórias do Rio e de Sampa (Urban Love: Stories from Rio and São Paulo), a book in which encounters, desire, affection and passion take center stage. 

“Flirting runs free through the urban landscape… we fly with the wind, rise to the clouds, flow onward, and overflow with life,” the author writes when describing the atmosphere surrounding his work. 

The book earned international recognition when it received an Honorable Mention in the Best Fiction Book in Portuguese category at the 2024 International Latino Book Awards, expanding the reach of Oliveira’s literary work beyond Brazilian audiences. 

Science, Literature and Cultural Exchange 

The connection between scientific knowledge and literary creation also defines a new stage in Oliveira’s international activities. As a Founding Member of the Hispanic-American Academy of Letters and Arts (AHLA), Paulo S. Oliveira represents Brazil as a professor, researcher and speaker. 

Through this role, he uses both ecology and literature as instruments for intellectual, academic and cultural exchange on the international stage. 

The transition between these two worlds reveals significant points of connection. While science led Paulo S. Oliveira to devote much of his career to understanding relationships in nature, literature has allowed him to turn his attention to the bonds, encounters and transformations created by human relationships. 

From forests and universities to the streets of major cities, the researcher and writer continues to build a career in which science and literature share the same foundation: curiosity and a willingness to observe life in all its different forms.
